A job that we recently carried out in Merseyside involved a football pitch resurfacing process to a run down synthetic grass tennis court. The existing court surface had to be ripped up and replaced with a 3G synthetic grass carpet to give better performance qualities for football.
Football Pitch Resurfacing
To begin the football pitch resurfacing project, we first had to remove the tennis court’s sand filled carpet which had become ripped and damaged over time. The damage to the existing tennis court surface meant that it was unsuitable for use by the sports centre so they decided to resurface it with a brand new 3G carpet.
Once the existing damaged carpet had been ripped up, the macadam sub base underneath was still suitable as a base for the new 3G carpet. It’s important to have the right kind of sub base installed for any sport surfacing installation as it creates stable foundations and ensures that the ground is correctly prepared for the surfacing. We prefer to use an engineered macadam sub base when carrying out 3G football pitch resurfacing as this gives the most durable groundworks for use with football and multi sports.
The next stage of the football pitch resurfacing project was to lay out the new 3G synthetic carpet. This artificial grass specification is ideal for football as it has the best synthetic fibres and a specialised sand and rubber infill layer which gives the surface the playing qualities of natural grass. For this reason, many schools, sports centres and lower league football clubs choose to have natural grass pitches replaced with the synthetic turf to help save money. 3G pitches are much more durable and require less maintenance than real grass so clubs can rent them out for use by others. When we installed the 3G grass carpet, it was rolled out in separate pieces and then glued together at the edges and the seams to keep the pieces in place. Finally, inlaid line markings were put in along with the sand and rubber infill layer to finish off the football pitch resurfacing project.
Completed 5 a Side Football Pitch
The end result of this project was a brand new multi use 5 a side football pitch for the sports centre which can be used for training and matches. With correct maintenance, the specially designed 3G synthetic turf carpet will be durable and last a long time so the facility can be enjoyed by many.
This particular project was carried out to a pitch which is covered by a sports structure, making it an indoor facility. However we typically carry out surfacing installation to outdoor sports pitches, these construction projects can include specialist sports floodlighting and rebound fencing to keep the area secure.
