IRB Approved Regulation 22 Synthetic Grass Rugby Pitch Accreditation is set out for the construction of rugby artificial pitches. There are design guides for community use and training areas with regards to the surfacing, construction, shockpad, fencing and maintenance of these rugby pitches. The rugby surfaces is a long pile synthetic turf which is infilled with sand and rubber.
The groundworks and sub base varies from project to project with regards to the ground conditions and drainage needed because the formation needs to be compacted well to meet a CBR rating of at least 2% which is Sport England guidelines and also drainage should be included to make the surfacing an all weather surfacing pitch.
The sports perimeter fencing is usually installed to enclose the pitch off and as football is usually also played on the all weather pitch then a rebound sports fence is always advised and specified on these projects with the sports floodlighting installed just outside this fenceline to light the sports pitch so it is able to be used of a night.
Rugby Pitch Accreditations
The IRB Type 22 Regulation sets out testing on the surface it needs to meet and a field test is carried out once the rugby surface is installed to make sure the performance specification is met. The manufacture of the IRB approved artificial grass will have had previous laboratory tests carried out on these carpets to make sure the rugby turf performance specification is met.
The field tests include the reaction of the rugby ball, reaction of a player to the artificial surface and resistance of the synthetic turf . The testing is needed to be carried out every two years to make sure the specification is being met and the maintenance contractor is making sure the surface is meeting the accreditation as when first installed.
