Upgrade Sand Based Astroturf Pitches to 3G, 4G Synthetic Surfacing is very common within the UK and here shows a project at St Peters, Wigan where they wanted a refurbishment and upgrade to their existing sports facility because wanted the ability to rent the sports pitch out of a night.
The project was an artificial turf pitch replacement which included a full rip out of old existing sand dressed synthetic turf, new drainage system installed, a new engineered macadam sub base installed, in-situ rubber shockpad and then a 40mm sand / rubber infill 3G synthetic grass that is now a facility that is able to be rented out at night to create revenue for the school. Soft Surfaces takes a pro active responsible approach to its environment and an example of this is that the old synthetic turf which we removed was recycled to lessen the impact on the environment and landfill sites. Also the rubber shockpad installed is a recycled rubber crumb which further helps the environment.
The old synthetic surfacing was deemed not safe as at the joints it had failed. The 6363m²pitch had adequate sports fencing and floodlighting so it was just the surfacing that needed renovation and this was to include new drainage as the area was prone to holding water and also to upgrade the sub base to an engineered macadam base.
This Synthetic 3rd Generation (3G) Pitch was installed, primarily for football, onto an in-situ rubber shockpad which prolongs the longevity of the surface. The synthetic turf sports grass is then infilled with sand to support the pile height and then rubber to meet all the playing characteristics. 4G artificial grass and 5G synthetic are very similar products with slight tweaks to the infill levels but these can easily be priced and costed for any future works should any schools, leisure centres or sports clubs want the different infill levels.
